Clean Sunscreen
While it is possible to make your own sunscreen, this is one product I recommend purchasing. Sunscreen should be a part of everyone’s routine, especially during days when there will be a lot of sun exposure.
People think of sunscreen and think protection, right? WRONG – kinda. While sunscreen does protect our skin from the sun (if used properly), most commercial sunscreen contain ingredients that can actually harm us.
When looking for non-toxic products, I like to look at the Environmental Working Group if possible. If the website does not have the specific brand or product that I am trying to find, I look up the individual ingredients on the product.
Why Switch?
It can argued that the amount of toxins in each product is small, but sunscreen is something that should be used every day. The toxins accumulate over time. Plus if you are still using other products with harmful ingredients, it can build up in your body.
You might be thinking “the ingredients must be safe if they’re allowed in our beauty products.” This is false thinking. The FDA does not have much power when it comes to regulating the ingredients in personal care products. In fact, the FDA grandfathered in ingredients used in the late 1970’s. While there is progress being made, there are ways we can help ourselves right now.
Harmful Ingredients:
Listed below are common ingredients found in sunscreen and their EWG score .
Oxybenzone (8): This ingredient has been linked to hormone disruption and high rates of skin allergies. Apart from what it does to our bodies, it is not good for the coral reefs!
Octinoxate (6): This ingredient has been linked to hormone and reproductive disruption as well as moderate rates of skin allergies. Octinoxate is also harmful to coral reefs.
Homosalate (4): This ingredient disrupts estrogen, androgen, and progesterone.
Octocrylene (3): This ingredient has been linked to high rates of skin allergies.
What I Recommend:
The thing I love about anything from Beautycounter is their “Never List.” Because of this list, I know that any of their products do not contain any yucky ingredients. Beautycounter does intensive research to make sure that any ingredient in their products will not harm us or the environment. For this reason, I trust their sunscreen.

I love the sunscreen by Love Sun Body! I have sensitive skin but I do not react to their lightly scented sunscreen. I found this sunscreen through Follain. They sell clean beauty products that I love! You can also find other clean sunscreen brands on their website if Love Sun Body isn’t your cup of tea.
